Honda riding lawnmower?

Have a problem.When I turn the key motor won't turn over.THERE IS 12 volts according to the voltmeter in the battery. Ignition swith also according to the meter is functioning correctly.I checked it inh every positon according to the wiring diagram.HOWEVER if I put jumper cables on the battery and junmp the solenoid it will crank.If I do not use the jumper cables and jump the solenoid it wont crank.Also when i get it to crank using the cables I do not get any spark to the plug. My question is if the solenoid is bad wil this happen.Some say the ign. coil but I don't understand how a bad ig. coil would keep it from cranking over.IF the solenoid is bad is this why it is making add more volts to get the starter to crank.And can a bad solenoid keep me from getting spark.Already tried a known good spark plug and still no spark.

possible the battery cables are bad?, I don't think the soleonoid would have anything to do with your spark but the coil would.
