General Motors Officially Enters Chevy Volt Into Manufacturing
The Volt went into production Tuesday following a celebration at the General Motors Detroit-Hamtramck plant. Chevy Volts can be hard to spot on the roads initially, because General Motors only plans for making 10,000 in 2011. After winning awards even before being made accessible to the general public, many think the Chevy Volt will be a large hit for GM.
GM stability with Chevy Volt
The business image for General Motors was tarnished after the bankruptcy. General Motors hopes that this will change while it becomes the leading electric automaker using the Chevy Volt for help. Before electric vehicle tax breaks, $41,000 is exactly what the price of the Volt can be. It's said to be more with the average American than it's for any celebrities trying to be eco-friendly. The “range anxiety” that customers have with electric cars that only have battery power will not be there with the Volt’s battery-gas motor according to analysts. The Volt is meant to be a balance between costly innovation and conventional economy for GM. Since the technology in the Volt was meant to adapt to other models, the electric vehicle race might have been won.
The Volt is different than others
The typical electric vehicle look isn’t what the Chevy Volt has. It is a four-door sedan. It's distinct and different. This is due to the power train in it. A 1.4-liter four cylinder engine has 150 horsepower within the electric motor. There is no connection to the drive train with the gas motor though. Electricity is generated to the motor when the electric battery runs out. Within the Volt this will be after about 40 miles. This is called an “extended-range mode.” It allows the Chevy Volt to go 344 miles total. There is an estimated 73 miles on the 200 percent battery-powered Nissan Leaf in 2010.
Car mags adore the Volt
As the Chevy Volt enters production, several developments have occurred in its favor. Buying an electric vehicle leads to a tax credit. $7,500 is the credit. A lot of PR is going towards the Volt too. The first electric vehicle to get the Green Car of the Year award was the Volt for 2011 by the Green Vehicle Journal. Also, the Volt was given 2011 Automobile of the Year by Automobile Magazine. It is called an “idea” instead of an auto within the magazine.

when converting an electric motor into a generator, how do you size the run capacitor ?
as I understand it, if you drive an electric motor a little over its rated RPM and add a run capacitor you then have a perfect sine wave generator? How do you size the run capacitor ?and is this true of 220 volt motors and 3 phase motors as well?
Indeed, if you run an induction motor past its synchronous speed it will start delivering power. For that to happen, it has to be excited, either by the grid or by adding an impedance matching capacitor.
However, in island mode, both the voltage and the frequency will vary with the load and you would have to readjust the speed and the capacitor to keep the frequency and voltage constant.
