Engine temp and idle problem?
95 Bonneville 154500 miles. Fuel injected, after market intake. My car has started acting weird this winter. Sometimes when i start it up the idle will drop down gradually as it should as the car warms up. Sometimes it stays at 1500 until the car reaches operating temp and then it will suddenly drop down to normal at 195. If i tap on the gas when the car's temperature is above 160 while it is warming up the idle will raise slightly then drop down to about 900-1000 where it normaly is while it warms up and it will then start sucking in air and the idle will raise back up to about 1500. This only happens in neutral and park. When i switch to drive or reverse the idle will drop down to where it should be, and when i switch it goes back up. When the idle raises up to 1500 the temp gauge in the car quickly drops down to about 150-160 degrees.
Your thermostat needs to be replaced with a new AC-Delco 195 degree unit. Any Chevrolet dealer has them. Normal coolant temperature should be 195 degrees after the car has warmed-up. If the temperature still won't go up, you need a new electrical temperature sending unit.
