Beginning Piano Lessons 101
Beginning piano lessons are your stepping-stones to becoming a good pianist. Despite being a relatively complex music instrument, piano can actually be mastered. We have prepared the basics of beginning piano lessons for you here.
{Understanding The Piano}
It is easy to be intimidated by the piano, but a degree of familiarity with its structure can do just the trick. For beginners, keyboards contain 12 keys that are arranged in a specific pattern. This pattern is repeated throughout the entire piano.
The piano's layout comprises of individual sets of black and white keys. Each of these keys correspond to a specific note whose numbers remain constant no matter the size of the keyboard. You would notice that both the black and white keys form a pattern that repeats throughout the entire length of the keyboard. The black keys are grouped in sets of 2s and 3s and white keys form the remainder of the pattern.
It is also noticeable that in any pair of two black keys, there is a white key preceding the set. This is what is called the key of C, the key where not only all octaves begin but also where most beginning piano lessons start from.
{The Middle C and The Finger Positioning}
The Middle C is the key that sits squarely in the middle of any keyboard. If you are using standard 88-key piano, this is the key that is located parallel to the manufacturer's logo. The importance of the Middle C – this is the key that just happens to be the focal point for the basic finger positioning for piano lessons.
In most starters' lessons, the Middle C position or position Number 1 is where everything begins. To properly take this position, your thumb, which is the number 1 finger for both hands, should rest on the Middle C. The rest of the fingers should lie on all white keys on both sides of Middle C.
If the thumbs are the number 1 fingers, other fingers have designated numbers as well. Thus, the thumb is number 1, the index finger is number 2, the middle finger is number 3, the ring finger is number 4 and the little finger is the number 5 finger.
{Now let's begin with your first lesson…}
For your first lesson, your thumb should be placed on the Middle C with the rest of your fingers taking their proper positions. Now begin pressing your thumb, followed by your index fingers and the rest of your fingers – one key at a time. Play each key slowly and evenly, do not pause in between each key. After pressing the fifth key, reverse the exercise and press keys 4 down to Middle C. This is what pianists call an arpeggio, repeat this exercise for at least 30 minutes.
For this first exercise, most of your fingers should have no problem maintaining a smooth and even transition between keys, although your 3rd and 4th fingers are expected to cause you some problems. This is natural since both fingers are not used to working independently. Overtime with exercise, the muscles of these fingers will become accustomed to independent work. For the time being, exercise individual control over these fingers.
Any beginning piano lessons should comprise of the abovementioned elements among other things.
