I have an old a/c condenser unit that just broke down. The fan motor makes a horrible groaning sound and stops spinning. I just replaced the contactor (it was fried). After putting it in, the system started up fine but after maybe ten minutes the groaning and refusal to spin returned. The condenser seems to be fine. It has a dual capacitor. Will the fan motor start with a bad capacitor? Which is more suspect to failing when hot: the motor or the capacitor? I think the motor, which is two phase, is losing one leg.
See if there is not a lot of endplay and worn out bearings in the motor. You could replace bearings on the cheap side but would b better off just getting another motor. But sometimes those squirrel cages are a pain to get off.
