Why does the air bag light stays on and other times it does not stay on?
I have a 99 Olds Minivan. SOmethimes when I start the car, the air bag light stays on and other times it don't stay on. (IT does blink about 5 times when you first start the car and once it stops blinking it stays on, and other times it will blink about 5 times and go off. I did have it checked my my mechanic and where I bought it from, and he said everything tested out ok, and the aig bag system works. (This van has both driver and passanger side air bags as well as side air bags on the driver and passenger seats) SOmetimes when the passenger in the front seat fastens their seatbelt before I start the car), then the air bag light stays on, however after I start the car and the passenger puts on the belt then it don't stay on. MY mechanic told me to take it to a GM dealer and have it checked out. But eveything works well. He is very sure that there is a bad sensor, and it may need a whole new cluster, and he told me that might not even do the trick. What is the best thing to do?
Take it to the dealer like he suggested. Do you hit a lot of curbs or anything? I have heard of those lights comming on when people bump into curbs, or something hard enough that the vehicle thinks there was an accident but the air bags weren't set off.
I don't think it has anything to do with the seatbelt thing, probably just a coincedence, but I could be wrong that's why I think you should take it to the dealer.
I would take it in asap because if there is something wrong with the airbags it could be very expensive to fix. I don't know if you have any warranty on the car, or if you just recently purchased it.
