gas furnace intermittent pilot light?
I have a Sears gas furnace with a Honeywell intermittent ignition device. When the thermostat asks for heat, the furnace may or may not fire up. When the furnace doesn't fire up, I can get the pilot to light by playing with a hose on the pressure switch. I would remove a hose on the pressure switch and reconnect it (sometimes up to 5-10 times) until the pilot lights. Each time I reconnect the hose, I can hear the ignition device kick in and try to light. I thought it was the thermocouple but my system does not have one. What could be the problem and what should I replace to get it working properly?
Since I am on of those MONEY HUNGRY HVAC GUYS!!! with only 32 years in the field, it could be the pressure switch that needs replacing. before you just replace you should verify if the inducer motor is preforming correctly with a manometer. There are very distinct reasons for this pressure switch, it checks and verifies that the heat exchanger is not plugged, flue is not blocked as well as the condition of the inducer itself. some times it is not only proper to have a Professional do the job but the safest and least expensive alternative. It is not really worth sevear physical injury or death at the expense of a service call
