What's The Most Effective Air Filter
Every person can benefit from inhaling air that's a bit cleaner than what our contaminated surroundings currently provides but they are most especially beneficial for those prone to allergies or asthma symptoms. Luckily, science and technology consistently evolves with the varying times. It has given us the tools to fight air that's increasingly filled with harmful particles. HEPA air purifiers are one kind of these tools.
Hepa air filters are the most competent category of air purifiers in the market in terms of capturing spores, dust or similar particulates. It has the capacity to get rid of at least 99.97% of particulates that vary from those bigger than 0.3-micrometer and to as little as 0.01-micrometer. Latest types have gone on to become consistently successful at eliminating 0.01 micrometers.
HEPA air filters have actually been around since the 1950s. They were employed to get rid of radioactive particulates in the air by the US Atomic Energy Commission. These days, the filtration system of these varieties of purifiers has developed dramatically. Among the changes in today's models are a multi layer system and electronic plates. Multi-layered techniques supply more than one filter to trap particles in the air.
Differently-sized filters for each layer are designed to prolong the life of the main filter takes care of capturing the littlest granule present in the air. Even with a higher primarypurchase, this can actually save you money in the long term since filters are rather expensive to replace especially those that are planned to capture very small particles.
Purifiers with electronic plates or ionic pro air purifiers electrically charge little specks in the air so it will be magnetized to shields with the opposite charge. The plate can easily be cleaned so they are quite economicalalbeit not equallyeffective in capturing the tiniest particles possible.
HEPA and ionic purifiers are effective against dust pollens, mold spores and the like but they are not designed to clean the air of germs, bacteria and viruses. That's where uv air purifiers become practical. These kinds of purifier are designed to sanitize the air of pollutants and some of these even have mixed features that make them all the more effective in eliminating both pollen, dust, etc. and bacteria.
electronic air cleaner question?
When I purchased my home in 1997 the trion trim t electronic air cleaner system was already installed. Recently I needed to purchase the pre cleaner filter and I was told that I should replace this air cleaner system because it produces ozone. Is this true? Should I upgrade to a new system? Are the filtering systems better today?
It sounds like a simple question but it is not and full answer would take way too much and not really be a full answer.
First they still arguing about it. A study was done in Canada that said ozone was harmful at any level and they banned the electronic air cleaners. But the US says that hasn't been proved and disagrees.
I used to see people that had ozone generators that produced high levels of ozone in the home. The only purpose was to generate ozone. They touted them as a health *benefit* and I have met a number of people that swore by them and said how good they made them feel and how it improved their health. Go figure
Second, the air cleaner mainly generates ozone when they are sparking or sizzling when they get too dirty. Yours is likely new enough that it has a power supply in it that reduces the ozone produced. The manufacturers made that change.
So the basic answer is that yes, they do produce very low levels of ozone but it is not known if levels that low are at all harmful. Personally I think not.
I think it is too bad. I really like those air cleaners because they do such a good job without restricting the air flow in the furnace while having little cost to operate. The HEPAs they want to use to replace them cost you a $50 filter every 3 months of use.
I have a couple of stand alone sharper image electronic air cleaners I really like. Totally silent too, but moves air. I did see because of this argument over ozone the new Ionic Breeze air cleaners they added a second plate for converting the ozone back to oxygen. But now Sharper Image is gone anyway.
So what I suggest is that you do some research to see if you think the ozone it produces is a problem. And I suggest you take most of it with a grain of salt because the people making the most fuss are those that sell the other filters and want your $200 a year for new filters.
I learned what a scam most of the "filters" business was with refrigerators. I knew a man that sold commercial filtering mainly for labs that had very high requirements. I asked him if there was any difference between the $39.99 filters for the refrigerator that only fit THAT refrigerator brand or model and the $8.99 ones that went on the water line before the refrigerator. He was able to show me ones they had cut apart.
There was no difference other than how they fit in and a 400% difference in cost. It was a big ripoff and big business, high profit.
So keep a skeptical sense about the cries and information you might find against the minimal ozone produced by the electronic air cleaners. They might only want your money.
Good Luck.
