Reprogramming Your Engine Computer
Your engine's computer needs to be flashed, or reprogrammed after being erased, if you want your engine control modules (ECM's) to stay up to date all the time. Cars newer than 1996 should have this done in order to make certain that microprocessors such as the power train and fuel injectors work the right way. Your engine does much better when the programming is up to date. It's a bountiful cash crop for repair shops, who tend to charge between $ 80 and $ 120 for the service, according to Under hood Service. Your car can be flashed by you if you have the right equipment around. Source of article - How to reprogram your engine computer by Car Deal Expert.
An engine computer reprogramming
If you need to reprogram your engine computer yourself then you need to be able to find the diagnostic port under the steering wheel inside the car which you will attach a special scanner to. Old programming is erased, and then changed with probably the most up-to-date software provided by the auto manufacturer. Back within the day, the reprogramming process involved removing different parts from the car, but now an USB cable, scanning device, and a pretty good Internet connection is all that is needed to work with the diagnostic port. The ECM is flashed with the new software direct from the manufacturer's website.
How often does the ECM have to be flashed?
Auto repair shops say flashing should be done once each few years, and this may be appropriate. Whenever you notice your car needs to be updated on its programming, then it's a good idea to do the flashing then, although if there is a recall then having your car flashed is necessary. It certainly isn't something a car owner should pay for as part of routine car maintenance.
Using a DAY flasher to do the work
It is simple to do usually. Take a look at the vehicle manufacturer's website to see if any software updates are available. Download the update into a flash programming device. Additional software for proper engine tuning may be necessary. Consult sources like DIYEFI.org for more specific information. You should also consult with your state's motor automobile authority, as more radical aspects of engine programming may not be street legal, which is the case in tough emissions states like California.
