How To Choose A Carbon Monoxide Alarm
The incidence of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the United States increases year after year, with an average of 10,000 Americans seeking medical help due to CO poisoning. CO poisoning usually happens in homes yet only around 27% of American homes have carbon monoxide alarms according to research studies.
The most common sources of CO are found inside our houses. If these sources leak out large amounts of CO in the air, you and your family can be in grave danger. Carbon monoxide is know as a silent killer, due to the fact that it isn't easily detected. The most effective way to detect CO is to install a battery-powered or an A/C powered CO alarm with battery backup. It is advisable to install CO2 alarms on all levels of your home. If you only have one unit, you should install it near your main sleeping area. CO alarms should be installed 15 feet away from fuel-burning appliances. It should not be obstructed and avoid installing it near windows or doors.
The choice of monoxide alarms on the market is pretty large. You should purchase the best product to ensure the safety of your family. Purchase monoxide alarms that have the most accurate sensing technology, preferably those that have electrochemical sensors, such as those produced by the Kidde Company. Experts recommend products that are Underwriters Laboratories (UL)-listed. One such alarm is the Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Detector.
Your monoxide alarms should also have a battery backup to ensure that it will continually monitor CO levels even during power outages where leakage usually occurs. Make sure that your unit has a large digital display that can clearly show CO levels even in dim light. Most CO alarms have a voice warning system that specifies the type of danger it is detecting.
For maximum protection, purchase CO alarms that can be connected to other alarm units. When one unit sounds an alarm, all of them will reciprocate giving you ample time to respond to the situation. This is a very important consideration and is more reliable than having a single alarm installed in one room.
How Do I Switch Off A Carbon Monoxide Detector?
I have a British Gas Carbon Monoxide Detector and it keeps bleeping every minute. I am unable to get to the battery as the cover is permanent. British Gas won't answer their phone until Monday morning, so any ideas other than taking a sledge hammer to the thing would be brilliant.
... because it is bleeping continuously it needs to be replaced I suspect, but I cannot throw it in the bin as it is so loud.
At the moment it is wrapped up in a bath towel but it is still really loud.
Open some Windows, they usu rally don't beep unless they sense something.
